Richard Avedonの代表作のひとつ。1979年にアメリカ・フォートワースのAmon Carter Museumが、Avedonにアメリカ労働者階級のまとまった数のポートレートの撮影を依頼したことが制作のきっかけ。それからAvedonは、5年間を費やし、のべ752名のアメリカ西部の人々を撮影したという。白バックの余白部分が、新たなイマジネーションをつくり出すと同時に、人物像を更に際立たせ、その本質をえぐり出すような効果をもたらす。Marvin Israelと、Elisabet Avedonによるブック・デザイン。
ハードカバー。透明アクリルカバー付属。経年ヤケ。
